Your self-talk is powerful. Control it!
When you find yourself thinking the thought, “Why can’t I…?” in relation to any topic, it triggers your brain to search for answers that highlight challenges, failures, or shortcomings. Left unchecked, these answers gain momentum, weighing down your emotions and making it seemingly impossible to stop dwelling on your problems.
While you can’t control your thoughts (the thought, “Why can’t I?” will appear sometimes), it’s within your power to control your response.
When you become aware of your mind fixating on negative thoughts, take a few deep breaths and remind yourself that there is nothing inherently wrong with you. This is simply how brains operate.
To shift your focus, reframe your question. Instead of dwelling on “Why can’t I?”, start contemplating “Why (or how) can I…?”.
Allow your thoughts to generate a stream of answers, reasons, and ideas. Keep them flowing until you feel grounded and confident in identifying one small step you can take towards the solution you desire. By redirecting your thinking, you empower yourself to move forward and overcome obstacles.
